John Cage  - September 5, 1912 – August 12, 1992

American composer, philosopher, poet, music theorist, artist, amateur mycologist and mushroom collector. A pioneer of chance music, electronic music and non-standard use of musical instruments, Cage was one of the leading figures of the post-war avant-garde. Critics have lauded him as one of the most influential American composers of the 20th century. He was also instrumental in the development of modern dance, mostly through his association with choreographer Merce Cunningham, who was also Cage's romantic partner for most of their lives. Cage is perhaps best known for his 1952 composition 433, the three movements of which are performed without a single note being played. The content of the composition is meant to be perceived as the sounds of the environment that the listeners hear while it is performed, rather than merely as four minutes and thirty three seconds of silence, and the piece became one of the most controversial compositions of the twentieth century. Another famous creation of Cage's is the prepared piano (a piano with its sound altered by placing various objects in the strings), for which he wrote numerous dance-related works and a few concert pieces, the best known of which is Sonatas and Interludes (1946–48).  I made this interview (subtitled in Italian) with John  Cage on the 22nd of June 1992, barely one month before the maestro’s death, in Perugia, Italy where he was presenting his “Music Walk”.

Meredith Monk - 1942

Is a composer, singer, director/choreographer and creator of new opera, music theater works, films and installations. A pioneer in what is now called "extended vocal technique" and "interdisciplinary performance," Monk creates works that thrive at the intersection of music and movement, image and object, light and sound in an effort to discover and weave together new modes of perception. Her groundbreaking exploration of the voice as an instrument, as an eloquent language in and of itself, expands the boundaries of musical composition, creating landscapes of sound that unearth feelings, energies, and memories for which we have no words. She has alternately been proclaimed as a "magician of the voice" and "one of America’s coolest composers." During a career that spans more than 40 years she has been acclaimed by audiences and critics as a major creative force in the performing arts.

Joel Peter Witkin 1939 -

Born in Brooklyn , New York in an Italian- Russian catholic family. Witkin buys a Reflex Rolleicord camera in 1955 and begins his quest to immortalize the revelation of the sacred unseen world. Seeing in the bodies and eyes of "freaks" the extraordinary and infinite will of God, in lack of original models Witkin at times recreates fantastic and grottesque scenes with bizzarre characters and settings full of metaphores representing the enigma of life. Seduced by mythological super heroes and esestential nonsense as proof of the manifestation of the devine. In 1961 he joins the army as photographer to document the dead soldiers. From 1970- 1974 he returns to Cooper Union School of Art where he gets a degree in sculpture. In 1975 he leaves New York and goes to New Mexico where he elaborates a new personal language in which photography and sculpture, graphic and manual artistry create the extraordinary language Witkins now uses to express his dreams and nightmares. In this 1995 interview at the Castello Rivoli in Turin we spoke of life and art, the metaphysics of the flesh and the influence Classic European art has had in his work.

In 1978 he moved to New York to study at the School of Visual Arts and became a fixture of the East Village club scene. In the 80's Haring began Graffiti Art, decorating advertisements in the New York Subway with his magic markers a series of narratives designed with white chalk on the black billboard paper of unused advertising spaces. His choice of imagery included means of communication like televisions and telephones, references to nuclear energy, childlike bodies. He embraced popular culture and hoped to break down the barriers between high art and low art.Haring provoked considerable debate both on street level and within the art establishment.
